mad scientists

Grace and Carter are loving their after-school science class.  Every week they learn something new and fantastic.  So far they've worked with dry ice, black lights and invisible ink, and chemical compounds.
Last week the kids wrote their "Things I'm Thankful For" tags in invisible ink.
They always bring home an at home lab as well.  This week the at home lab involved litmus paper and testing the pH of common household items.  The kids had to work on this one the minute they walked in the door.  So we did.
First, we rounded up some things to test.  I made sure to include some that would be high on the scale, and some that would be low.
My little scientists at work.  Carter is testing.  Grace is recording the results.
A few of our test strips and the chart we used to determine the pH
Finally, we arranged all of the substances we tested in order from most acidic, the lemon, to most alkaline, the Windex.  Just for the record, diet coke has a pH of 6, it's pretty much neutral.
It was a great experiment and the kids loved the fact that they got to use real test tubes with stoppers. I loved this kind of thing when I was a kid, I'm glad Grace and Carter do too.  We can't wait to see what the next Mad Science experiment will be...
